Mirah johnston
Mirah Johnston is a Boston-based operatic mezzo soprano originally from the small town of Nottingham, New Hampshire. Mirah graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University, earning a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance. Following her time at BU, Mirah was accepted into the New England Conservatory of Music where she graduated with a Masters of Music in Voice and Opera.
While at NEC, Mirah was given many performance opportunities in opera productions, recitals, and large choral works. Her most recent roles include Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro and the Minskwoman in Jonathon Dove’s Flight—both produced by the New England Conservatory Opera Program.
Mirah developed a love for opera as a little kid going to see summer festivals with her grandparents and listening to her older sister practice in the house. However, from a young age Mirah also studied musical theater, jazz, and contemporary styles of singing—along with piano and percussion lessons.
Throughout her academic career, Mirah has taken classes on Music Theory, Piano, Vocal Pedagogy, Acting, and Alexander Technique. Her skills as a piano and voice teacher have developed significantly over the past two years working as a Teaching Assistant for the Voice for Non-Majors elective course at NEC. As a voice teacher, Mirah encourages her students to build confidence in themselves as performers, musicians, and artists as they work to reach their goals and build technique as a vocalist.
When she isn’t practicing, teaching, or performing, Mirah might be exploring new areas of the city, going out to eat with friends, playing with her two cats (Rupert & Mishka), or digging through racks of clothes at the thrift store!
